The Modern Artisan is a unique partnership between YOOX NET-A-PORTER and The Prince’s Foundation, the educational charity established by His Majesty The King Charles III (then HRH The Prince of Wales). The pioneering training programme supports British and Italian graduates to design and handmake a luxury capsule collection of womenswear with a focus on sustainability. Carbonsink helped the Artisans in the creation of this carbon neutral collection, which is YOOX NET-A-PORTER’s first.

Carbonsink has collaborated with YOOX NET-A-PORTER for the second edition of the Modern Artisan for the creation of a new responsible ready-to-wear luxury womenswear capsule collection, launched in November 2022. We held a series of workshops with the Artisans, who designed and handcrafted the collection, in which they learnt about the important considerations of a product’s life cycle during the design phase as we encouraged them to think about materials and manufacturing, through to shipment and use by the customer, and ultimately the product’s end of life.

Our climate consultancy enabled the Artisans to minimise the carbon footprint of each garment of their new collection. We then calculated and compensated for the residual emissions, resulting in the 13-piece capsule being YOOX NET-A-PORTER’s first ever carbon neutral collection.

To compensate for the residual carbon footprint of the collection, the Artisans chose to purchase carbon credits generated by certified offsetting project Kariba Forest Protection. The project protects forests and wildlife and supports community-based training and upskilling on the Zimbabwean-Zambian border.

“YOOX NET-A-PORTER’s ambition is to shape a more responsible future for luxury and fashion. We are proud of our collaboration with Carbonsink, creating our first ever carbon neutral capsule collection, integrating climate awareness in the design and production process and minimising each item’s carbon footprint, as well as offsetting residual emissions, and communicating this to our customers. We believe that fashion has an important role to play in tackling climate change and we hope that this initiative helps drive a more sustainable and circular fashion system” Rosie Gaunt – Social Impact Manager, Sustainability, Project Manager The Modern Artisan
