Renewable energy solutions

Switching to renewable energy is one of the fastest ways to reduce the carbon footprint. Moreover, in an increasingly volatile market, it is an excellent way to protect companies against rising costs and ensure energy security.

The Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) requires companies to set climate targets based on rapid and massive emission reductions through direct actions within their perimeter and along the value chain. Renewable Energy Solutions are key tools available to companies so they can achieve these objectives, acting on Scope 2 emissions, i.e. those due to the production of purchased and used energy. The main solutions are:

  • Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): contracts for the purchase of
    energy generated by a specific renewable installation, enabling companies to meet renewable electricity targets at scale, achieve cost savings and manage the risks of price volatility in the long term;
  • Energy Attribute Certificate (EAC): a tool that certifies the renewable origin of electricity; it can also be traded separately from the underlying energy. There are various types of certificates, depending on the purpose, the process of obtaining them, and the countries where the company operates: I-RECS (certificates for renewable energy produced in countries outside the EU), RECs (certifying the production of renewable energy in the U.S. and Canada), Guarantees of Origin (certifying the renewable origin of sources from qualified facilities in Europe);
  • Green tariff: a single tariff in which electricity purchased from the supplier is combined with renewable solutions;
  •  On-site renewables: renewable energy produced on roofs or land adjacent to the company site for direct consumption, storage or export.
