LIFE SUBSED: the European project for the affirmation of an innovative and sustainable agriculture

After the kick-off meeting held in early October, Carbonsink is proud to announce the official launch of "LIFE SUBSED - Sustainable substrates for agriculture from dredged remediated marine sediments: from ports to pots".

The sustainable agriculture project, approved and approved for funding by the European Community, was developed by an important and varied group of partners, including CREA - Horticulture and Floriculture Research Center of Pescia, Flora Toscana SAC, the Spanish company Viveros Caliplant SL, the CNR Institute for the Study of Ecosystems of Pisa and the University "Miguel Hernandez of Elche".

LIFE SUBSED deals with a very topical issue with considerable applicative potential both for the protection of the environment and for the development of the flower and vegetable garden production.

It is in fact a study on the possibility of being able to re-use and convert a waste (the marine sediment dredged from the port of Livorno) into a resource (a commercial substrate) through the application of sustainable techniques, both from an environmental point of view from the economic one.

After appropriate treatments, in fact, the dredged muds will be transformed to create a compost that can be used in nursery gardening for the production of ornamental, fruit, horticultural and aromatic plants in pots: olive, citrus, laurel, calla, basil, blueberry and wild strawberry.

The European SUBSED project has the main objective of addressing legislative and cultural barriers on the use of innovative substrates in agriculture, producing guidelines for the safe and sustainable use of sediments in the composition of a substrate.

The project that will go on until 2021 wants to increase awareness and support the agricultural sector and sediment management, providing economically sustainable solutions thanks to the development of more efficient cultivation techniques.
